Here is a weird film. If you are looking for a new way to look at the world around us and want to see a decent conspiracy/action/sci-fi film, then this is the movie for you. Of course, if you want something that will rankle your Christian sensibilities, look no farther!
The plot is very complicated. Humans live in a "world" but I can't say what it's like without ruining the story. But we humans live in a fog...not knowing the Truth. Watch for some cool dark scenes that are reminiscent of "Oddworld: Abe's Oddysee" (a PC/Playstation game).
Rather than mess the movie up for those that haven’t seen it, I’ll gloss over most of the plot and complain about the bad stuff.
We have a hero nerd named Thomas A. Anderson (AKA: Neo; played by Keanu Reeves) who seems to be a hacker. He’s acquired by the good guys but not before he’s "bugged" by the agents, who are led by Agent Smith (Hugo Weaving). (To find out what it is to be "bugged," watch the show. It’s nasty!) A couple of chicks led by Trinity (Carrie-Anne Moss) debug him and take him to they’re hover craft. He learns the ropes and learns various forms of self-defense and whatever else he needs to know by having it downloaded into his brain. The leader of the heroes is named Morpheus (Laurence Fishburne).
The whole point of the film is for the hero to defeat the agents, which are the protagonists in the film. The agents can "transport" into any human within the virtual domain. It’s confusing and I can’t explain it, but suffice it to say, they’re almost omnipresent.
It’s cool to see the neat SFX. Some of them are almost organic. The plot has some parallels with Christianity in that the hero was prophesied to come eventually and free us from the Matrix and the agents, there's a chick named Trinity, and the heroes main city is named Zion. There are some other religious type stuff in there too that are anti-Christian.
Anyway, the fight scenes are cool. Clip after clip are loosed and we see some interesting fighting and slick bullet dodging as the good guys kick some butt.
The Good Stuff:
![]() | The special effects! |
![]() | The plot was deep…not that good though… |
![]() | Watch those robots move, baby! |
The Bad Stuff:
![]() | Whoa! Major cursing! This film will get a bad rating in that department because they use Christ’s name in vain many, many times. The only film I know of that I’ve seen that swears more is "Tremors." Don’t watch that thing unless you have a V-chip or have a sub-titled version!!! |
![]() | Again, the plot…weird and confusing stuff! |
![]() | The GIANT needles! Ow! OWWWW! |
![]() | What is up with the recording!? It’s hard to hear the actors because they mumble most of the time…so you crank it up to hear them and then they SHOUT all the swear words making you immediately turn it back down!!! ARRRRR! |
![]() | Neo is resurrected by Trinity kissing him...right...the ONLY One that can be resurrected is Jesus Christ!!! (Or someone that Christ resurrects...) |
Stupid Quotes:
Spoon boy: Do not try and bend the spoon. That's impossible.
Instead... only try to realize the truth.
Neo: What truth?
Spoon boy: There is no spoon.
Neo: There is no spoon?
Spoon boy: Then you'll see, that it is not the spoon that bends,
it is only yourself.
Agent Smith: Do you hear that, Mr. Anderson? That is the sound of inevitability.
Cypher: I know what you're thinking, 'cause right now I'm thinking the same thing. Actually, I've been thinking it ever since I got here: Why oh why didn't I take the BLUE pill?
Don’t believe the hype. It’s not that great. Think Episode 1 of Star Wars: it’s not as good as they say it is. If you like action and sci-fi and don’t mind getting your mind screwed up with the swearing and double-talk, then watch this sucker!
