What a strange movie! But I find it hilarious!! It’s based on a popular manga (and anime) of the same name. Thus, it has lots of over-the-top humor throughout. This is also one of the few Jackie Chan movies I’ve seen that doesn’t have Jackie doing his own dubbing.
It begins with Jackie Chan and his partner and we get an overview of who "City Hunter" is and what happened to his partner. "City Hunter" is a detective. His partner gets riddled with bullets and as he "dies" he tells City Hunter (yes, that’s what he’s called throughout the movie!) not to seduce his niece, Kaori (played by Joey Wong). (City Hunter is also a "womanizer.") Kaori (pronounced: Carrie) becomes City Hunter’s assistant.
City Hunter is taken to his first assignment/case (in the movie) on top of a car whilst he sleeps. Yeah, it’s weird, but Kaori just couldn’t wake him up. She even tried to act like a dog and that didn’t work either! Anyway, he wakes up when he hears a chick say something. And then he learns that he must find a rich businessman’s daughter, Kiyoko (that’s spelled so you can pronounce it…I don’t know how to really spell it).
Kiyoko is found in a skate park and we get to watch a cool skateboarding chase scene. Jackie goes through a window and jumps over cars and just does some really neat tricks! But Kiyoko escapes and Jackie returns home.
Then there’s a stupid scene with a bunch of girls surprising Jackie with a b-day party. But they have an ulterior motive; namely, they want City Hunter dead. Well, City Hunter quickly puts an end to that!
Kaori wants City Hunter as a boyfriend (of course, he doesn’t realize this) and catches him with all these chicks. She gets upset and leaves. Now City Hunter has to find Kaori AND Kiyoko!
OK. Did you get all that? Good! Now, Jackie spots Kaori going onto a cruise ship and sneaks onboard too. Coincidentally, Kiyoko is also onboard and so is a couple of chicks that I think are on some kind of undercover assignment. There’s also a terrorist group on board.
Kaori walks around with a cousin who has a problem keeping his pants up. He’s a jerk and keeps trying to get Kaori into bed.
Well, rather than go and tell you about the entire plot, I’ll just list some highlights:
![]() | There’s a weird dance-video type scene in Chinese! |
![]() | Jackie has a neat fight scene in a theater with some huge Africans. |
![]() | Sammo Hung is some sort of Captain on the cruise ship. |
![]() | Jackie finds Kiyoko. |
![]() | Watch a card player (Leon Lai Ming) throw deadly cards! Yeah! It’s kind of like Gambit! |
![]() | Jackie has two neat fight scenes with a body builder. In the second one, they are dressed up like characters from "Street Fighter," complete with sound effects! |
To end the movie, City Hunter must take on the boss of the terrorists. He’s known as "Mac" or "MacDonald" (Richard Norton) and if you’re into Jackie Chan movies, then you know he’s in "Mr. Nice Guy" too and that he’s the villain in that one as well. Anyway, this is also a cool fight scene.
Finally, Jackie gets knocked unconscious by Kaori due to his flirting. Stupid! But it was funny. Besides, you get to see a neat looking Mitsubishi right before he’s smacked. I think it’s a concept car.
I like this movie. It’s in my top two Jackie Chan movies and my top ten movies of all time.
