When I got this, I'd heard that it was an enjoyable story of knights. In a way, that is what it is, but it's more a doofy love story about a wannabe knight and his homies and a "lady-in-waiting" whom has odd ideas of what love really is.

We begin with some guys trying to wake a knight. They are the knight's squires and he's dead. He died in a jousting event which we saw just moments before. William Thatcher (Heath Ledger) is the leader of the squires and he suggests to his comrades, Roland (Mark Addy) and Wat (Alan Tudyk), that he can replace their boss and win so they'll have some money. Thus, he begins a journey to knighthood. After winning, he cajoles his friends into doing it full time.

Now, you need to understand that in this movie, ONLY nobles can joust (ie: be knights). These three are not nobles, but peasantry. Luckily, the come across a naked man walking the road. His name is Geoffrey Chaucer (Paul Bettany) and he's a writer. They hire him to make false papers for Will so he can be a knight. (They need to show his lineage for a few generations to enter the next tournament.)

Later on, we find out he's a gambler and he gets his friends in trouble. More nudity ensues, all of it Chaucer's. Will goes on to win more jousting tourneys as well as a sword fight or two. He also falls for a girl he sees on the street. All we know about her is that she dresses fairly well. Eventually we learn her name is Jocelyn (Shannyn Sossamon).

Through bumbling poetry and some corny lines, they fall for one another and love abounds! Luckily we're not shown any nudity between the two. It's assumed in one scene that they have relations, but other then that and Chaucer's clothes problem, it's a pretty clean movie in this area.

There's an evil knight that wants Will's woman and he's a major jerk. I think he's named Count Adhemar (Rufus Sewell). Anyway, he's a cheat and hates Will. He manages to find out Will's true lineage and gets him tossed in prison. Luckily, Will did a favor for someone in a high place and he's freed. That's all I'll say about that. Watch the movie, as that's about the only plot twist in the entire film.

The Good Stuff:

Well done costumes

Some interesting music: rock... in the Dark Ages...

Jousting information and knights are always cool.

Chaucer has some clever lines...and his intros for Will are kind of funny.

Cool blacksmith...

The Bad Stuff:

There's a little cursing. I think it was contained at less than 10 for the entire flick, though.

Nudity!!! ARRR! Lot's of backside and some cleverly hidden profiles.

The jousting stuff is graphic violence and it looks pretty painful.

Dumb Stuff:

Jocelyn thinks that love can only be proven through manipulation. If you, William, will do such and such for me, THEN AND ONLY THEN, do you truly love me.

I thought this was an okay movie. Good with popcorn. Nothing difficult about the formulaic plot. Nothing to think about at all. It's a nice laid back movie. Enjoy it!!!
