It's hard to find good dragon movies. This is probably one of the only ones that I like and even this one has a lot of dumb stuff in it. Dragons are cool. I just wish Hollywood could make a good movie with them.
Well, this movie begins with a knight named Bowen (Dennis Quaid) training Prince Einon (Lee Oakes). Bowen's much better. It's reminiscent of Yoda and Luke Skywalker or the old Zorro training his replacement in The Mask of Zorro. Bowen knows what he's doing and Einon is a doof. Well, there's a battle going on nearby where Einon's father and his men are trouncing a revolt from the peasants. Einon insists on going to see the battle and ends up watching his father get killed and he gets mortally wounded too.
His mother takes Einon to a dragon and gets it to let Einon have half of its heart. Unfortunately, Einon was a jerk and they should have let him die. Bowen blames the dragon for making his King evil and vows to find him and kill him. So, Bowen becomes a dragon hunter and kills dragons. In the meantime, King Einon (David Thewlis) oppresses the peasants and builds himself a large castle.
Bowen manages to kill all but one of the dragons. He becomes the last dragon's friend because they can't defeat each other. Bowen ends up calling the dragon, Draco (Sean Connery) and they go to different villages and scam the people there. Bowen defeats the awful dragon for money to save the village.
The other major plot point in the movie is about a girl named Kara (Dina Meyer), the daughter of a peasant that started the original revolt. And she's also the one who mortally wounded Einon. She gets a little older and ends up watching her father get killed by Einon. And finally, she tries to assassinate the king, but instead she's captured and almost raped by the guy. Ugh! Right after that happens, the king's mother sneaks in and releases her.
Eventually, she hooks up with Bowen and Draco and convinces them to come and help her gather an army to overthrow the king. Well, you get the idea. And I'm sure you can guess what happens. Who gets it and who doesn't. Who gets the girl? Duh! You know! (Hint: it's not the dragon!)
The Good Stuff:
![]() | Draco |
![]() | The special effects were great! |
![]() | The acting was pretty good. It wasn't stellar, but it wasn't awful either. |
The Bad Stuff:
![]() | There's a little swearing, but that's not why this movie is PG-13 |
![]() | It's the violence! It actually not that bad. But you have the stabbing and slashing that is required in a battle scene. Luckily, there's not much in the gore department. |
![]() | No soundtrack to speak of. There's probably something happening in the background, but it's nothing note-worthy. |
Dumb Stuff:
![]() | Dragons have souls and Draco the constellation is dragon heaven. |
![]() | You must earn your way to this heaven... |
![]() | It sounded like some of Draco's last words promoted astrology. |
![]() | For some reason you had to kill the dragon to kill Einon. They were connected by Draco's heart, but it made Einon immortal...as is evidenced by getting shot and stabbed in his heart. This is incredibly INANE!!! |
![]() | Maybe this is why Draco doesn't toast Einon when Einon gets in Draco's face...it would have cost more money to make a burnt fella run around killing people... |
I like this movie even though it has faults. There's some funny stuff, some positive elements about self-sacrifice and what-not and there's a cool dragon. Get it if you like dragons.
