So, you go to the video store and you want something funny. What do you pick? Something awful, like American Pie or Mouse Hunt. No! Pick up this one! It's bad b-movie horror and it's a lot funnier and less crude!
Of course, this movie has some bad stuff in it too. However, it's almost impossible nowadays to find a clean movie of any sort.
Yes, it's a goofy movie. However, it's got some cool special effects, a few good actors, and great puppets! Watch as Gizmo enjoys Rambo and eventually becomes a Mowgli-Rambo himself. See Christopher Lee as a scientist that experiments on all sort of animals. Stare in shock when the tape stops and the Gremlins take over your TV screen for 5-10 minutes!!! (And they're exclusive to the video version!)
All right, you're probably thinking: "This movie sounds STUPID!!!" You're quite right. It is! That's why it's funny!!!
The story goes something like this. The old Chinaman has Gizmo again, but he is being muscled into selling his shop so Clamp Corp. can build. He won't sell, but he's so old that he dies anyway. Gizmo gets caught by a scientist and is taken to a high rise where his old master, Billy Peltzer (Zach Galligan) from the previous film happens to work. They cross paths and Gizmo is rescued!
Of course, Gizmo ends up getting left alone in Billy's cubicle. And whilst there, he gets wet from an errant water fountain when it's being worked on by a janitor (John Astin, the guy from Addams Family...the original). Here we see the cool and yet sickening scene where Gizmo's back comes alive with little moving furr-balls. New nasty Mogwai come out and imprison Gizmo.
Anyway, you can guess what happens: The new Mogwai eat after midnight and become Gremlins. Then they end up multiplying and taking over the entire building. Some of them drink a bunch of enzymes/potions in a lab and become mutant-Gremlins: There's an electric one, a spider-Gremlin, a smart, talking Gremlin, a veggie-Gremlin, and a flying Gremlin.
There are a ton of jokes strung throughout. From the Batman logo in a wall caused by the bat-Gremlin flying through it, to Leonard Maltin (the movie guy) giving a bad review to the original Gremlins and then getting attacked by the new ones.
The Good Stuff:
![]() |
Lots of funny site gags. Watch for the "flashing" Gremlin! |
![]() |
Mostly it's all the funny things that are thrown in |
![]() |
as well as the goofy "coincidences" that happen. |
The Bad Stuff:
![]() |
There's cursing for no apparent reason! |
![]() |
There's a little bit of gore... |
![]() |
And a game of footsie. Yuck! |
![]() |
Oh, and the protagonist lives with his girlfriend...but they want to get married... |
Yeah, this is a funny film. It's got predictable parts in it, and a lot of unpredictable stuff. Like, who knew that Star Trek: Voyager's doctor (Robert Picardo) would start out in a movie like this falling in love with a girl Gremlin? Anyway, watch it and enjoy! Or watch it and hate it, I don't care!
