Yes, it’s another weird, old film. Yes, it has a crazy plot. Does that make a bad movie? Nope! I thought this was quite wacky and an enjoyable way to spend an evening.

The plot is about a girl named Trudy Kockenlocker (Betty Hutton) who is very patriotic. She wants to send off the soldiers by dancing with them at a party that night. They’re off to war and need to be shown a good time before they leave. Well, her father, a Constable (William Demarest), disagrees. He thinks she might do something crazy, like get married. She’s barely out of high school, if that, for heaven’s sake!!!

For an added joy, we have Norval Jones (Eddie Bracken), a guy that’s smitten with Trudy. Trudy is blocked from going to the party, so she calls Norval and says she’ll go out with him. Then she acts like a baby to get him to stay at the theatre whilst she goes to the party. They’re supposed to meet up again at one-ten that night. She gets drunk off some spiked lemonade and doesn’t pick up Norval until eight in the morning.

After a few hours, she thinks she got married under an assumed name that she can’t remember and she also cannot remember her husband’s name. (This entire tale is being told over the phone to the Governor (Brian Donlevy) of the state and to a few other high officials…you’ll find out why, if you watch the film!) So, Emmy (Diana Lynn (I)), Trudy’s sister tells her to remarry. How? By getting Norval to marry her under the name that she thinks might be the soldier’s name…then she’ll have a real marriage license and won’t be disgraced. Why would that happen? Because she’s pregnant! How they found out she was pregnant after only a day or so is beyond me. Maybe more time passes then it seems…

I personally like the Constable’s, Emmy’s and Norval’s acting the best. The Constable is great at being a grumpy, but caring father. Emmy is an excellent know-it-all sister/daughter and Norval is a superb fool. He’s always stuttering and has some great lines.

It would be kind of fun to describe all that happens in the movie, but then there’d be no reason to watch it. I only do that to awful films!

The Good Stuff:

I enjoyed most of the characters in the film. Trudy was a little too dumb, though...
Original plot, at least I'd never heard of anything like it...
Funny acting.

The Bad Stuff:

Trudy marries and has a baby with someone she doesn't know.
There is a little drunkenness...

This is a pretty funny film. You feel sorry for Trudy since she doesn't even know what happened to her. It's practically date rape. Anyway, I enjoyed it. It's wacky and offbeat. I recommend it!
