Synopsis:
Kei Kusanagi is a high school student that has what is dubbed "stand-stills." These are periods in his life where he goes into mini-comas where his body does not age. He's had short ones that last a few minutes and one that lasted three years. Thus he looks like a 15-yr-old when he's actually 18.
He sees an alien land one night and she ends up being his teacher. Next thing you know, she's also his wife. Let the theatrics begin!
The Review:
Yes, there's a lot of people out there that think this show is sick. Oh no! A teacher marrying her student, blah blah, pedophile, etc. This is bunk. If the alien, Mizuho Kazami, had been cast as a high-schooler, there wouldn't be any problems. Yeah, she might be slightly more endowed than a typical teen, but not for an anime show. And I think her age is pretty indeterminate in the show.
Anyway, this is what I thought Ai Yori Aoshi would be. That show was supposed to be romance with some comedy thrown in. This one is mostly romance with comedy being mostly of the embarrassing nature. You see people growing in their relationships and that love isn't about sex. Love is something you have to work at. That's what makes this show work.
The story is much like I said in the Synopsis; Kei sees Mizuho land and then materialize out of nowhere. She catches him seeing her and gives chase. I'm not sure what happens next, but they end up in an apartment because he went into one of his trances. He tries to escape and finds himself in her spaceship. He manages to majorly screw up her computer (which is a stupid-looking little bobble-headed yellow humanoid) and they end up transported into his Uncle's bathtub. It should be noted here that Kei lives with his Aunt and Uncle. I don't think it has yet been explained what happened to his parents.
Kei's Uncle is a perv and he's pretty funny. He seems to be a doctor and his wife is always having to keep him in line. It's because of this Uncle that Kei ends up having to marry his teacher. This leads to lots of problems as he can't tell his friends what's going on. And one of his friends has a crush on him and this also causes many problems.
Both Kei and Mizuho are very shy, so at most you only see short skirts, a little cleavage and almost kisses. There are some stupid "sexual" poses in the intro, but they aren't anything overt, more are of her just looking cute. They are there more for the sick-o's out there than anything else, at least as far as I can tell
Anyway, like I said, they get married. So we get to see what it's like for them to live together and what-not. The final episode has Mizuho getting jealous of Kei because he goes on a date on accident. Kei and this girl get set up by her friends.
I watched half the disc in English and the other half in Japanese. Both versions seem pretty good to me. The English staff do a good job in their voicework and because the show isn't frantic, the sub was easy to read. The only really annoying part of this show is the writer's love to use the phrase "Priority One" or "It's a Priority one" or something along those lines. They said it so many times in the latter half of the 1st episode that it made you want to bang your head against the wall. Why does she say it? Because to this alien, that means that IT is the highest priority and she was usually telling this to her computer so that whatever order she gave would take the most precedence.
The Good Stuff:
![]() | I like a good romance as long as it's not all about sex, and this one isn't |
![]() | Very nice artwork, animation and character design |
![]() | An interesting story without TONS of chicks going after the lead |
![]() | I don't remember any swearing, but there might have been something |
![]() | The soundtrack is ok, although mostly it's unobtrusive |
The Bad Stuff:
![]() | The plot is rather weird as Kei is always talking about going forward and stuff speeding up. And there's that "Priority One" stuff too |
![]() | A little bit of panty stuff, but mostly you see a little cleavage, or just chest shots that are completely covered. There are also some nighties that are short, but no worse than the skirts on any school girl in anime |
![]() | The Uncle is a little perverted |
![]() | The romance can leave you feeling for the people involved, so there is the "squirm in your seat" factor which might be upped for those that think it's too naughty for a teacher and a student to be married. |
I liked this show. It was slow-paced, but quite well put together and I looked forward to seeing how the characters would grow. There's room for improvement in the dialog and it could be better, but for what it is, it's pretty nice.
Recommended for those that like romance with a little light comedy. It's innocuous enough to allow children in the room, although it might be hard to explain the teacher-student part of it.
