Godzilla Vs. Spacegodzilla

1/2 ( only because it's my favorite, so I can give anything I want )

Okay, if you've actually seen this film, you're probably thinking, "What kind of an idiot would give it 4 and a half stars?" Well, this idiot does. I don't know what it is about this one, whether it's the cheesy looking opponent, the silly trio of male heroes, or the sweet and adorable Little Godzilla (who actually looks like some sort of Pokemon-Godzilla clone ) but this one is my self-proclaimed fav.

Now, granted, when compared to the rest of the Modern Series, Space-G could arguably be called the worst. The plot, such as it is, is ludicrous, the battles drag out WAY too long, and the title creature does look like a recycled G-suit with clear plastic spikes on it's shoulders. The MECHA of the film M.O.G.U.E.R.A (Mobile Operations Godzilla Universal Expert Robot Aero-type) is a very odd looking machine, being an adaptation from a 50’s Toho film. One character states that it is the "Ultimate counter Godzilla weapon," but when compared to the modern Mechagodzilla it really seems like an air-line jet compared to an F-15.

Mothra makes a brief cameo, via "Fairy Mothra", which you can read more about in the Rebirth of Mothra review in the Review Section. The twin fairies tell our favorite psychic Mikki that she somehow has to save the earth from Spacegodzilla, and that she apparently is the only one who can. In the end she even gets credit from them for saving the earth, which is totally bogus because Godzilla and M.O.G.U.E.R.A did all the work, and the robot got blasted to smithereens.

One creative idea in this movie, which granted could have been done much much better, was the plan by G-Force to control Ziller by planting a telepathic mind controller in it's cerebrum. But this plan fails badly. Amazingly too strong a brain for such a dumb animal. Another point, if I may, is that this movie really brings Godzilla out of his "villain" status that the entire Heisei series was based on. It started a little in Mecha-G 2, but in this film he really returns to the feel of the 60s and 70s where he was the good beast that protected us weak and feeble humans from the evil space creatures.

To wrap it up, terrible dubbing job hits hard on the effect of the film, especially when Space-G is rampaging through Fukuoka and a Japanese News babe is doing the old William Shatner over acting, and the special effects are a bit of a disappointment after the wonderful job of MG 2, but if you found yourself missing the good ol' days of Defender of the Earth Godzilla in silly sci-fi space battles, then watch and enjoy.

Just ignore the history of Spacegodzilla's origin and it will seem a little more sensible. Oh, and parents, like I'm going to be doing from now on, I want to warn you that the language in this one is a little ruff at times, and there is a brief rear-view of one of the Japanese heroes taking a shower in the dark. Pretty gross, but only half a second long.

Music score also a nice change from the last three. And no, don't bombard the owner of this nice website with e-mail saying that "Spacegodzilla's a joke! Who is this moron Sam?!"
