Yes! Another anime movie! There just isn't enough of these things in the US of A! Actually, there's probably plenty, but it's hard to find them and it's even harder to find funny ones.
Slayers is an over-the-top comedy about to sorceresses. The main character is Lina Inverse (voice by Cynthia Martinez (II)). She has what amounts to a side-kick in the scantily clad Nahga the Serpent (voice by Kelly Manison).
The movie begins with what looks like a kid or elf saying Lina's name and then when he's about to introduce himself, Lina awakens and wonders if she's been dreaming. Not an auspicious beginning, but unique in my mind. Lina then goes wandering down the road and steps on a guy's out stretched leg. You're probably wondering how that could happen...well, this guy and his two brother's are bandits (really stupid ones!) and they thought that Lina would stop when he started howling.
She doesn't and so they chase after her and a rather stupid scene ensues. It's funny, and the bandits get blown up. There's a lot of slap-stick. Well, off she goes with their money and buys herself some food. The bandits catch up to her and sic another sorceress on her. It's Nahga! Whenever she's introduced in these movies you end up with some rather perverted close-ups...
Well, Lina blasts her and then they both team up on the bandits. Then their off to Mipross Island. While there, they do battle with some huge guys and various types of wizards. There's plenty of skimpy clothing for the guys as well as some swearing, done almost exclusively by Lina (it may have only been her...although the Demon or Rowdy might have too..).
There's a cool fight with a warlock of water, Juliame Jubibienzo (Guil Lunde), that has a dragon made from water. The guy has some really good lines...Then we see some funny stuff with a mind-reader/hypnotist guy and some hairy-legged goons. And there's a top-heavy dragon to boot! (No, the dragon is not top-heavy like that! You're sick! Its head it WAAAAY too big for it's body!)
The two intrepid adventurers meet the king of Mipross (voice by Paul Sidello) and if you like anime then you'll realize that this guy's voice sounds suspiciously similar to the king in Dragon-Half. It's great!
Anyway, we learn the tale of what's really happening on the island from the king as well as from Rowdy (voice by Phil Ross (II)), a weird warlock(?) that keeps manipulating Lina's dreams until she gives him a good kick in the head. It seems that sometime in the past, a demon named Joyrock came along and killed a bunch of elves. This wasn't supposed to be and Rowdy has summoned Lina to help rectify the matter.
Lina and Nahga go to Joyrock's (voice by Tristan MacAvery) lair and find a hairy toad creature that laughs hysterically. They find out that it is Joyrock and that he can change form. Anyway, they do a little fighting and Lina and Joyrock each would one another. Then Rowdy jumps in and rescues Lina. They learn about Rowdy's love and soon it's time to kick some more demon-butt!
They blast some demon dogs and then Joyrock pops out of a dimensional portal and kills(?) Rowdy by sticking his arm through Rowdy's chest. This is pretty nasty...Rowdy shouts that he's got Joyrock now, and that now is his down-fall. A time warp opens and sucks Lina and Nahga into it.
Lina finds the young Rowdy (voice by David Bell (IV)) and helps him defeat Joyrock in the past, when he's not as powerful. (He got a lot more powerful from killing all those elves...) Then she goes back to her own time again.
The Good Stuff:
![]() |

![]() |
The bad guys were well done. |

Rowdy was cool too! |
![]() |
Interesting story... |
![]() |
It's got a good score. |
![]() |
Sorceror A (voice by Greg Stanley) |
The Bad Stuff:
![]() |
Cursing in a cartoon! |
![]() |
Really dark stuff...demons...killing...nasty...but gore and what-not is kept at a minimum...unlike some anime. |
![]() |
Lots of references to Lina's not being well-endowed. (She looks fine to me!) |
![]() |
Plenty of scantily clad females. (And some nudity in the trailers for other anime...well, only one anime showed that: Cutey Honey) |
![]() |
You guessed it: Witchcraft! |
I like Slayers. It's interesting and can be hilarious. Unfortunately, there's a lot of negatives that come with it. If you're not well grounded in the Word, then you shouldn't be watching it...actually, if you ARE grounded, then you should know better. It's not any worse than Spiderman, though.
